| Our first visit of the day is the famous town of Nimbin, where we stop
for about an hour, giving you plenty of time to stroll the colourful
streets full of alternative shops and cafes. |
 |
Located on the edge of Nightcap National Park and over-looked by the
dramatic Nimbin Rocks, Nimbin was settled in the 1840s by timber
cutters and farmers. In the early 20th century Nimbin was known as a
quiet dairy village. However, in 1973 things changed when the
Australian Students Union decided to hold the Aquarius Festival in
Nimbin Valley. The festival was to be a cultural and 'alternative'
lifestyle experience for hippies and wannabe drop-outs Australia-wide.
Most of the festival visitors returned to their cities and regular
lives but a small number remained and Nimbin became the unofficial
capital for the alternative lifestyle and the environmental movement.

The first weekend every May
Nimbin holds the 'Mardigrass ' which is a harvest festival and street
carnival celebrating the harvest of local cannabis crops. It's also a
demostration by the Nimbin Hemp Embassey for the legalisation of
Marijuana. |
